HYPERION TO PUBLISH THE ROLLING STONES’ OFFICIAL 50TH ANNIVERSARY GIFT BOOK, CURATED BY THE ROLLING STONES

“This is our story of fifty fantastic years. We started out as a blues band playing the clubs
and more recently we’ve filled the largest stadiums in the world with the kind of show that
none of us could have imagined all those years ago. Curated by us, it features the very best
photographs and ephemera from and beyond our archives.”
Mick, Keith, Charlie & Ronnie
New York City, March 2, 2012 – Hyperion today announced plans to publish the only official and authorized book curated by the Rolling Stones to commemorate the band’s 50th anniversary. To be published internationally with their full support, and featuring previously unseen photography and ephemera—as well as new text from the band—The Rolling Stones: 50 by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood will be a truly groundbreaking and memorable photographic autobiography to celebrate fifty years of the greatest rock ’n’ roll band in the world. The Hyperion edition of the book is scheduled for release in the United States and Canada in Fall 2012.
The Rolling Stones: 50 is the official book to celebrate the Stones’ fifty years since their first appearance at the Marquee Club in London’s Oxford Street on Thursday, July 12, 1962. In the intervening years the Stones have performed live in front of more people than any band in history. They’ve had #1 singles and albums in every country with a popular music chart and have helped define popular culture.
Written and personally curated by the band members themselves, The Rolling Stones: 50 draws on a wealth of rare and unseen material including unique access to the extensive archive of London’s Daily Mirror. In anticipation of the anniversary, the Mirror revisited its archives—the largest newspaper collection of Rolling Stones photography—to look for photographs taken of the Rolling Stones from fifty years ago to their most recent performances. The range and quality of the images so impressed the Mirror and then the Stones themselves that both parties realized they had the material for a very special book on their hands. Much of the never-before-seen material includes commissioned photography from legendary photographers of the band*, originally collected ephemera, and some of the rarest items of memorabilia in the world. As well as the superb photography, the book recounts the band’s fifty-year history in a way that’s never been done before, telling their legendary story through their own words accompanied by images specially selected by the band. In addition, Charlie Watts, an art school graduate, has overseen the design.
The announcement of the new book was made by Ellen Archer, President and Publisher of Hyperion. Of the deal, Archer said, “An anniversary such as this calls for an amazing book. Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ronnie have been hard at work—approaching the book’s content from every conceivable angle—to make it so. We’re thrilled to publish this incredible project for fans in the United States and Canada.” Gretchen Young, Executive Editor, negotiated the deal with Thames & Hudson. Hyperion retains North American and eBook rights.
This remarkable book is the band’s thank you to their fans all over the world. Its publication will be part of a year-long worldwide celebration of the rock ‘n’ roll royalty that the Rolling Stones have become.
The book’s cover is a collaboration between the art directors Stephen Kennedy and Jimmy Tilley at Studio Fury (who have already worked extensively with the Stones), and image-maker Ian Wright, whose career has spanned four decades and has included acclaimed work for The Face and the New Musical Express as well as Issey Miyake, Givenchy, Mike Tyson, Björk, Ian Brown, Pete Townshend, Tony Bennett and many others.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HYPERION TO PUBLISH THREE ORIGINAL EBOOKS IN BESTSELLING
NOVELIST RICHARD CASTLE’S ACCLAIMED DERRICK STORM SERIES
New York City, February 20, 2012 – Hyperion today announced plans to publish three original eBook novellas by renown mystery writer Richard Castle, marking a return to his internationally bestselling and award-winning Derrick Storm series. The first eBook, titled A Brewing Storm, will be published in May 2012 and will bring the former CIA operative out of retirement. The as-yet-untitled second and third Derrick Storm eBooks are scheduled for release in July and August respectively.
Castle, whose eponymous hit television show “Castle” airs on ABC Monday nights at 10 PM, is also the author most recently of the bestselling Nikki Heat novels, based on his ride-alongs with NYPD Detective Kate Beckett with whom he solves crimes and trades barbs. The latest thriller, Heat Rises, debuted at #1 on The New York Times hardcover fiction bestsellers list in October 2011.
Mr. Castle said of the eBook deal, “While consulting with the NYPD on a recent case, I was inspired to re-examine the circumstances around the death of my beloved character Derrick Storm. It turns out, there was much more to the story than met the eye. I’m excited to be working with Hyperion to bring Derrick Storm fans a brand new adventure of mystery, action and intrigue.”
The announcement of the new eBooks was made by Ellen Archer, President and Publisher of Hyperion. Of the deal, Archer said, “Acquiring new stories in Richard Castle’s Derrick Storm series is a proud moment for all of us at Hyperion. We are honored to partner with Mr. Castle in bringing his popular character Derrick Storm back to life, and introducing him to a new digital audience.”
Gretchen Young, VP Editorial Director for ABC Synergy, negotiated the deal. Young is Richard Castle’s longtime editor of the Nikki Heat series. Hyperion retains World and eBook rights.
“Castle” premiered on ABC in March of 2009, featuring bestselling mystery novelist Richard Castle. In that debut season, the charming and charismatic Castle, (portrayed by actor Nathan Fillion) was paired for research ride-alongs with NYPD Detective Kate Beckett (portrayed by actress Stana Katic), and with her found the inspiration for his fictional detective Nikki Heat, the intriguing main character of his next series. During the second season, Castle opted for a three-book deal to continue the Nikki Heat series over an offer to write three books in a not-to-be-named internationally bestselling spy series. The third season ended with a cliffhanger, which is reflected in Heat Rises. One thing is for sure—the smoldering chemistry between Beckett and Castle continues to sizzle in the precinct throughout the fourth season. Richard Castle currently lives in Manhattan with his daughter and mother, both of whom infuse his life with humor and inspiration. Follow Richard Castle via Twitter at www.twitter.com/WriteRCastle.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HYPERION SIGNS MASSACHUSETTS GOVERNOR DEVAL
PATRICK TO UNIQUE USER-GENERATED TWO-BOOK DEAL
Original Low-Priced eBook Exclusive for Release in May 2012;
Book Two, to Be Shaped by Americans, for Release in 2014
New York City, February 2, 2012 – Ellen Archer, President and Publisher of Hyperion, today announced plans for a unique deal to publish two nonfiction books by Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The first title will be an eBook exclusive—with no print book companion—priced at $2.99 to connect with a broad and diverse readership. This written work will become the launching point for social media interaction with readers that will contribute to the second book. Offering a fresh twist on the time-honored tradition of political pamphlets, the eBook exclusive represents a strategic expansion of Governor Patrick’s core vision, building on his already established social media platforms to engage in conversation with readers in new and creative ways perfectly suited to the modern digital age. Titled FAITH IN THE DREAM: A Call to Our Nation’s Liberal Majority to Restore American Values, will be a short inspirational call to action for all Americans and an antidote to our current climate of cynicism and disillusionment. Governor Patrick reminds us about the importance of the American dream, a cornerstone of our history and prosperity that, to many people today, seems up for grabs. He explains how we arrived at this precarious crossroads, and how we must continue to believe in, defend, and uphold the American dream. Scheduled for a May publication to lead into the 2012 national election season, the tone and reflections will mirror the themes Governor Patrick will be discussing as he makes public and media appearances in support of President Obama and the Democratic Party in 2012.
“While traditional books by political figures are a publishing staple during election cycles, releasing an electronic exclusive opens up a whole new space—the digital frontier—and allows us to spread the Governor’s visionary message far and wide in ways that were never before possible. With its affordable price point, and technology-friendly format, we expect this eBook will achieve a broad grassroots reach and create a unique user experience,” said Ellen Archer. “Governor Patrick is a forward-thinking leader and we’re honored to partner with him on this unique publication.”
“I’m excited to collaborate with Ellen Archer and her innovative team.” Governor Patrick said. “Together, we can expand on a new vision for America, in conversation with concerned voters. I want to hear from the American people about their faith in the American dream and promise.” Governor Patrick is the first African American governor in Massachusetts and only the second in the history of our country. In the campaign for his election, and for his reelection, the Governor traveled to scores of communities to meet with people in their living rooms, workplaces, schoolrooms, and places of worship—and made innovative use of the web to connect with an extensive and richly diverse cross-section of voters young and old.
Building on the Governor’s growing nationwide movement for conviction-based politics, the author’s second (currently untitled) work for publication by Hyperion in 2014, will be released simultaneously in both print and eBook formats. As readers of the first original eBook, FAITH IN THE DREAM, respond to the author’s ideas and share their own stories not just of pursuing the American Dream themselves but of helping other people do so, too, this second book will allow the author to cultivate a wide-reaching national conversation about the fundamental beliefs and values—and the inspiring collective acts of courage and grace—that make America and its citizens the envy of the world. Governor Patrick joins Hyperion’s pantheon of civic leaders and public individuals that includes Congressman John Lewis, Marian Wright Edelman, and Caroline Kennedy (whose most recent Hyperion release was selected Best Enhanced Book of the Year by Apple’s iBookstore as part of Rewind 2011).
Senior Editor Christine Pride negotiated the deal with Todd Shuster of Zachary Shuster Harmsworth and will edit the books. Pride worked with the Governor on his first book, A Reason to Believe which was published in April 2011. Hyperion retains North American, first serial, audio, and eBook rights.
Governor Patrick is donating a portion of the proceeds from this work to A Better Chance, a nationwide organization dedicated to opening the doors to greater educational opportunities for young people of color.

Hyperion’s JACQUELINE KENNEDY: HISTORIC CONVERSATIONS
ON LIFE WITH JOHN F. KENNEDY has been selected
Best Enhanced Book of the Year
by Apple’s iBookstore as part of Rewind 2011
NEW YORK, NY – (December 13, 2011) – Hyperion Books’ bestselling and ground-breaking enhanced eBook, JACQUELINE KENNEDY: Historic Conversations on Life with John F. Kennedy, Interviews with Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., 1964, has just been named the “Best Enhanced Book of the Year” by Apple’s iBookstore as part of Rewind 2011. A one-of-a-kind multi-media project that gives readers personal access to intimate conversations between the recently widowed Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy and historian Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., JACQUELINE KENNEDY: Historic Conversations on Life with John F. Kennedy incorporates audio, video, photography and text to take readers inside the Kennedy White House, exploring family life, state visits, and major historical events.
Ellen Archer, president and publisher of Hyperion, said, “With source material as intimate as these audiotaped conversations, Hyperion needed to re-imagine the eBook to give the audience the sensory experience of being close to Jacqueline Kennedy at her most vulnerable and revealing. For the first time ever, the technology is available to relay the full experience. Text and pictures by themselves simply would not do the project justice.” In his review of the project in The Atlantic, publishing veteran Peter Osnos praised it and commented that “the success of the Kennedy book has set a meaningful bar for bestsellers in the enhanced format.”
A companion to the #1 New York Times bestselling print book, JACQUELINE KENNEDY: Historic Conversations on Life with John F. Kennedy eBook brings what would normally be considered bonus material—audio and video— to the fore, which required an innovative approach. In putting the eBook together, the eight and a half hours of digitally re-mastered audio recordings became the organizing principle. The goal was to create one product that bridged all the multimedia assets into a remarkable reading experience with minimal download time. In close collaboration with Caroline Kennedy, seven video selections were culled from nearly twenty hours of archival footage to open each conversation chapter. These video selections offer chronological accompaniment and contextualization to the subsequent conversations, setting the scene for Mrs. Kennedy’s interviews and enhancing the audio experience. Each chapter opens with a video, followed by the audio, text transcript, and photographs, followed by annotations at the end of the book. HYPERION TO PUBLISH NOVEL BY PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING WRITER J.R. MOEHRINGER
March 28, 2011 – Hyperion today announced plans to publish a first novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling memoirist J.R. Moehringer. Not yet titled, the novel is a work of historical fiction based on the rollicking life of Willie Sutton, the most beloved bank robber in American history. Sutton, who robbed 100 banks between 1925 and 1950, making off with two million dollars, also broke out of three escape-proof prisons—all without firing a single shot. He might never have been caught for good, if not for Arnold Schuster, a young crime buff who, in 1952, spotted Sutton on a Brooklyn subway and alerted police.
Three weeks after Sutton’s arrest, Schuster was killed outside his house by an unknown gunman.
Moehringer’s novel draws on vast research, including long-lost files from the New York Police Department and the FBI, plus interviews with descendants of Sutton and Schuster, who have never before spoken to reporters. Publication is scheduled for Fall 2012.
“I’ve been fascinated by Sutton since I was a boy,” Moehringer said. “My grandfather used to talk with some amusement, and some awe, about Willie ‘The Actor,’ about his disguises, about his commitment to nonviolence. He was the Gandhi of gangsters. He was also a lover, a reader, a thinker, and a social critic ahead of his time: he detested banks. He thought bankers were the root cause of everything wrong with society. No wonder he became such a folk hero.”
The announcement of Moehringer’s debut novel was made by Ellen Archer, President and Publisher of Hyperion. “We are thrilled to continue our publishing relationship with J.R., who is a superb writer,” Archer said of the deal. “Readers will love this suspenseful, funny, sad, and bawdy tale, enlivened by J.R.’s exhaustive and fascinating reportage—this is a story so wonderfully strange, it could only be true.” Archer negotiated the deal with Mort Janklow at Janklow & Nesbitt. Moehringer will reunite with freelance editor Peternelle van Arsdale, his editor on The Tender Bar, and Hyperion Editor-in-Chief Elisabeth Dyssegaard will oversee the process. Hyperion retains North American and eBook rights.
A former Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, Moehringer won a Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing in 2000, while a national correspondent with the Los Angeles Times. Fresh off the critical and commercial success of The Tender Bar, last year Moehringer helped tennis champion Andre Agassi write his #1 New York Times bestselling memoir, Open.

VOICE TO PUBLISH MEMOIR BY GOLDEN GLOBE AND
EMMY AWARD–WINNING ACTRESS JANE LYNCH
February 1, 2011 – Hyperion’s Voice imprint today announced plans to publish a new book by Golden Globe and Emmy Award–winning actress Jane Lynch, who plays one-liner powerhouse coach Sue Sylvester on the hit television musical series Glee. The book, a funny and inspirational memoir titled HAPPY ACCIDENTS, is scheduled for publication in September 2011. It will focus on Lynch’s career, from The Second City to Christopher Guest movies and Judd Apatow projects, and how getting sober and embracing her sexuality helped her find both personal and professional joy.
Jane Lynch said of the new book, “If I could go back in time and have a conversation with my 18-year-old self, the first thing I’d say is, ‘Lose the perm.’ Second, I would say, ‘Relax. Really—just relax. Don’t sweat it.’ For a long time, I was anxious and fearful that the parade would pass me by, and that someone or something outside myself had all the answers. Having finally reached a happy place—a happy accidents place—I want to share my story with others, to let them know things aren’t as bad as they fear.”
The announcement of the new book was made by Ellen Archer, President and Publisher of Hyperion. Of the deal, Archer said, “We are delighted to be publishing Jane Lynch’s memoir and showcasing her humor and honesty. We’ve all been fans of her career for many years, from Best in Show to her red-hot star turn on Glee.”
Editorial Director Barbara Jones acquired the memoir at auction, negotiating the deal with Mel Berger at William Morris Endeavor. Jill Schwartzman will edit the book. Hyperion retains North American, nonexclusive open market, audio, eBook, and first serial rights.
Jane Lynch has appeared in many films and television shows, including the Golden Globe and SAG Award–winning FOX television series Glee. She has won a Golden Globe Award, an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress, a People’s Choice Award, an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress, two back-to-back Golden Globe nominations, and a SAG award nomination. Lynch can also be seen in the upcoming film Paul.
